Commissioner to appear before the Committee on Health

On February 11, 2009, a resolution was passed by the Chicago City Council calling for the health commissioner to appear before “the Committee on Health to give testimony and answer committee members questions concerning the decision to close the Back of the Yards, Beverly/Morgan Park, Greater Grand/Mid-South and Woodlawn Department of Health mental health facilities.”

The date of the next meeting of the Committee on Health has not been announced.

The Resolution

RESOLUTION CONCERNING THE CLOSURES OF ONE-THIRD OF THE CITY OF CHICAGO’S MENTAL HEALTH FACILITIES

WHEREAS, The public has expressed an extremely great concern over the City of Chicago’s announced closing of a third of the city’s mental health facilities; and

WHEREAS, The closures of the Back of the Yards, Beverly/Morgan Park, Greater Grand/Mid-South and Woodlawn Department of Health mental health facilities, all located on the South Side of this city, impose a specific hardship of those who reside in and around those communities; and

WHEREAS, In 2006, this august body passed a resolution that called for a moratorium on closing the city’s mental health centers; now therefore

BE IT RESOLVED, That we, the undersigned members of the City of Chicago City Council, assembled this 11th day of February, 2009 A.D., do hereby call upon Commissioner of Health Dr. Terry C. Mason to come before the next meeting of the Committee on Health to give testimony and answer committee members questions concerning the decision to close the Back of the Yards, Beverly/Morgan Park, Greater Grand/Mid-South and Woodlawn Department of Health mental health facilities.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That a suitable copy of this resolution be prepared and presented to Health Commissioner Dr. Terry C. Mason.
